The VUB Food Forum, in cooperation with VUB’s Institute of European Studies (IES), is organising on 19 April 2016 a policy forum on ‘New Novel Food‘. In December 2015, the Union legislator adopted Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, thereby reforming the legal framework for novel foods marketed in Europe. Until 2018, the Regulation will entirely replace its 1997 predecessor Regulation. It re-defines novel food and introduces a centralised EU authorisation system with the aim of simplification, promoting new technologies and providing greater legal certainty. European citizens should have a broader choice of food, and Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 is meant to make that easier. The policy forum starts at 12:00 and will end at approximately 14:30. The first Policy Forum of the ‘EU Food Law: What’s on the Menu?‘ series organised by the VUB Food Think tank will take place on 5 May 2014. It will be devoted to novel food and count with the participation of Sirkku Heinimaa (European Commission, Directorate General Health and Consumer Protection), Frédéric Leroy (VUB), Phillipe Mortier (Belgian Ministry of Health), Harri Kalimo (IES) and Jens Karsten (Lawyer at bxl-law, Brussels). On 25 November 2013 LSTS will welcome a presentation by Katja de Vries (LSTS) and Sebastian Abrahamsson (Universiteit van Amsterdam) titled ‘Food, Law and Waste: The Muffinman Case‘. Inspired by the case of Steven De Geynst, who in 2011 took two bags of muffins from a dumpster outside a GB supermarket in Rupelmonde and was brought to court for theft, they will analyse how food waste can be legally conceptualized (through property, sanitary regulations and privacy laws). Drawing upon the events that followed, they will also explore the conflicts between different interests and concerns that were actualised. The presentation will take place from 12:30 to 14:00 in the VUB room 4C306.
