The Big Brother Awards are aimed at raising awareness on surveillance practices by putting under the spotlight public institutions, private companies, policies or technological innovations perceived as particularly endangering the fundamental rights of individuals, and notably their rights to privacy and personal data protection. For the 2012 edition of the Belgian Big Brother Awards, co-organised by the Ligue des droits de l’Homme, the Liga voor Mensenrechten, the Vlaams-Nederlands Huis deBuren and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the public is invited to vote on line to identify the most threatening candidate (see full list and vote in Dutch or in French). The price will be awarded in Brussels on Thursday 26 January at 8:30 pm, in the context of the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) International Conference. The celebration will be preceded by a debate on ‘smart meters’, starting at 7 pm. Location: Halles de Schaarbeek, Koninklijke St.-Mariastraat 22b, 1030 Schaarbeek. Registration is optional, through this email: bba@mensenrechten.be.
