Pecha Kucha Night Brussels Volume 26, 23 January 2013, at 20:20: 20 images. 20 seconds each. Tempo, story, tension, show-and-tell. The Pecha Kucha Brussels format includes designers, architects, artists, scientists, fashion designers, photographers, musicians, and creative entrepreneurs. A reception is organised on Tuesday 22 January 2013 at the Permanent Representation of Poland to the EU, to celebrate the 7th European Data Protection Day. Confirmed speakers are Wojciech R. Wiewiórowski, Inspector General for Personal Data Protection; Peter Hustinx, European Data Protection Supervisor; Paul Nemitz, Directorate C, Fundamental rights & Union citizenship, European Commission; Jan Philipp Albrecht, MEP, Joe McNamee, EDRI, and Marisa Jimenez, Google. The event is a joint effort of the Minister Wojciech Wiewiórowski and the Inspector General for Personal Data Protection. It takes place in the context of the 2013 CPDP Conference. The Privacy, or 2nd UnConference On Privacy And Data Protection, is an event dedicated to privacy and data protection challenges and possibilities in Europe, which will take place in Brussels on 22 January 2013. It has been launched by European Digital Rights (EDRi), the Law, Science, Technology and Society research group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB-LSTS) and the Université Saint-Louis. This event is a free-to-attend pre-conference of the 2013 Computers, Privacy and Data Protection Conference (23, 24, 25 January 2013). LeenLagrou-21 An art exhibition reflecting upon privacy and technology will open on Tuesday 22 January 2013, at De Markten, in Brussels. The exhibition, called A look inside, will display works by Stanza (UK), Sylvain Vriens (NL), Manu Luksh (UK), Panopticons (NL), Ief Spincemalle (BE), Bureau d’Etudes (FR), Heath Bunting (UK), Bart Dewolf (BE), Humans Since 1984 (SE), Constant (BE), Briko2K (BE), Dawamesk, Alex Mayo & Bob de Groof (BE), Heardryers (BE) & BRTNY (BE). Opening: Tuesday 22 January 2013, 19.00 – 22.00. Exhibition open Tuesday to Sunday, 12.00 – 18.00, until Sunday 03/02/2013. Closed on Mondays. This is one of the numerous side events taking place in Brussels around the 6th Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) International Conference.

book coverOn Wednesday evening 23 January 2013 Professor David Lyon (Director of the Surveillance Studies Centre, Queens University, Canada) will present his new book Liquid Surveillance: A Conversation, which he co-authored with Zygmunt Bauman (Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University of Leeds, United Kingdom).

The presentation will be followed by a lively roundtable discussion moderated by William Webster, University of Stirling (UK) with the following panellists: Ann Rudinow Sætnan, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NO), Didier Bigo, King’s College London (UK) and Kristin Veel, University of Copenhagen (DK).

This event is scheduled in the context of the CPDP 2013 International Conference and organised by VUB-LSTS and LISS (Living in Surveillance Societies)-COST Action in cooperation with Polity Press, deBuren & De Markten.
